Landscaping and Masonry in New Canaan, CT

New Canaan is a short drive up Route 123 from our yard. We build stone walls, terraces, plantings and lighting that suit its houses, from classic colonials to mid-century moderns, and hold up to the deer and the winters.

Route 123 runs from our side of the city right up to the village, so getting a crew and a load of stone to a New Canaan property is quick and easy. That keeps travel costs out of your price.

What building in New Canaan involves

Houses with a strong point of view

New Canaan is known for its mid-century modern houses as much as for its colonials and stone-and-shingle homes. The landscape has to suit the house. A modern house usually wants clean lines, large-format stone and restrained planting. A traditional one wants fieldstone, boxwood and a softer edge. We design for the architecture you have, not a generic plan.

Stone walls everywhere

Old fieldstone walls line the roads and property lines all over town. New walls and terraces look best when they sit naturally beside them, and older walls often need sections reset after decades of frost and tree roots. We do both.

Deer and shade

Wooded lots bring shade and a lot of deer. Plantings here have to survive both, so we lean on deer-resistant shrubs, perennials and grasses, and we place the plants deer do browse where they’re easiest to protect.

Wells, septic and wet ground

Outside the village, many properties have their own septic systems, and there are wetlands and streams throughout town. Before we regrade or add drainage, we locate the septic tank and leach field and keep water and machines clear of them. Work near wetlands can need the town’s approval, and we’ll flag it on the site walk.

What New Canaan homeowners usually call us for

How we work in New Canaan

Every job starts with a free site walk. A foreman measures, photographs, checks grades and listens to how you use the yard. You get layout drawings, material samples and one fixed written proposal, usually within 3 business days. The same crew builds the job from start to finish, cleans up every night and walks the finished work with you. Hardscape and masonry carry a 2-year workmanship warranty.

Questions we hear

New Canaan questions

More answers

Do you work in New Canaan, CT?

Yes. New Canaan is a short drive up Route 123 from our yard, so we’re regularly on site there. Site walks and estimates are free.

What can we plant that the deer won’t eat?

Nothing is completely deer-proof, but plenty of shrubs, perennials and grasses are left alone most of the time. We go through some of them in 12 Plants That Thrive in Fairfield County Front Yards, and we’ll suggest a mix for your light and soil on the site walk.

Can you design landscaping for a modern house?

Yes. Clean-lined houses usually call for simpler hardscape, such as large-format bluestone, crisp edges, fewer plant varieties used in bigger groups, and lighting that shows off the architecture without glare. We’ll talk through the look you want and show it in the layout drawings.
