Stamford is a city with very different yards in it. A Shippan or Cove property can have salt spray, sandy soil and not much room. A North Stamford property can have woods, rock, a long driveway and a slope to deal with. We work at both ends, and the plan changes with the property.
What building in Stamford involves
The shoreline neighborhoods
Near the water, wind and salt from Long Island Sound wear on stone, mortar, fixtures and plants, and some streets sit low enough that water is slow to leave after a storm. We choose materials for salt exposure, set patios on a deep compacted base and grade them so water runs away from the house. Work close to the shore can need coastal review, and we’ll tell you on the site walk if yours might.
Compact lots in town
In Stamford’s denser neighborhoods, the backyard has to work hard. A patio sized to how you live, a seat wall that doubles as seating, privacy planting along the fence and lighting so you can use it after dark can make a small yard feel much bigger.
Woods and rock in North Stamford
North of the Merritt Parkway, lots get bigger, more wooded and rockier. Many homes there have their own wells and septic systems, and slopes are common. That means retaining walls and stone steps, drainage planned around the septic field, and plantings that can live with shade and deer.
Rivers and wet ground
The Rippowam River (the Mill River downtown), the Noroton River on the Darien line and their tributaries run through the city, and wet ground along them is common. Any work near a wetland or watercourse may need city approval first. Where water is collecting in your yard, we find out where it comes from before we decide on a French drain, a dry well or regrading.

How we work in Stamford
Every job starts with a free site walk. A foreman measures, photographs, checks grades and listens to how you use the yard. You get one fixed written proposal, usually within 3 business days. The same crew builds the job from start to finish, cleans the site every night and walks the finished work with you. Hardscape and masonry carry a 2-year workmanship warranty.
